GORILLAS IN THE MIDST OF AN ALMIGHTY BUST-UP

The fur really flew as the 440lb, six footers hurled themselves at each other in a clash over … who was sitting in whose spot.

For, as ferocious as this clash looks, it’s little more than a scuffle.

And these western lowland gorillas can get into spats like this up to a dozen times a day.

After an awful lot of spectacular breast-beating and blood-curdling roars, they walk away.

Usually all that’s bruised is their pride. This showdown, between Ambam, 18, and Boumi, 19, took place not in Africa but at Port Lympne Zoo near Folkestone, Kent.

It was captured on camera by amateur photographer Nicholas Godsell. Yesterday his shot, taken last year, won a prize in the zoo’s annual photography competition.

This aggressive behaviour is reassuring to zoologists. It means the gorillas are acting just as they would in the wild.

Port Lympne and its sister zoo Howletts are home to 74 of the critically endangered species.

They hand-rear baby gorillas which are then reintroduced to vast reserves back in their native Africa, in Gabon and Congo.

Without such schemes, they could be lost in the wild by 2020.

The gorilla numbers are down to fewer than 50,000. Hunted for bushmeat, losing their habitat because of deforestation and being decimated by Ebola virus, they are a species on the brink.
